5 Days Out in Minneapolis, Along the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway
The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, made of connected green spaces all around Minneapolis, meshes with 300 miles of regional trails. Explore outstanding bike paths and more than 50 miles of scenic driving parkways. In winter, the city clears the trails of snow by 6 a.m., for the residents who walk or bike to work.
The Grand Rounds offers some great recreational activities too. Here are five sample days out to enjoy them.
1. Visit Lake Harriet Park
Set your map app to 4135 W Lake Harriet Pkwy. In summer, there’s music at the Band Shell.
2. Experience the Minnehaha Creek
Life is merry when you paddle your own canoe. Do it on the Minnehaha Creek, to enjoy forest and wetland ecosystems, neighborhood riverbanks, and natural parklands.
See Minnehaha Falls. Enjoy the most stunning natural beauty of this city.
3. Walk or Bike Along the Mississippi
This is the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway’s connection to downtown Minneapolis. Take the five-mile Winchell trail loop near the west riverbank. Rugged detours veer into the woodlands of the Mississippi gorge.
Between 38th and 44th Streets is the paved walking segment of the Winchell Trail and a bike path.
4. Catch a Live Show at the Guthrie
Head to 818 South 2nd, and catch a world-class performance at the Guthrie, where rave reviews are all in a day’s work.
This cultural gem is in the Downtown Riverfront district of the Grand Rounds.
5. Theodore Wirth Park
Theodore Wirth Parkway takes you into the Theodore Wirth Park, the largest of our city’s parks, with flora and fauna in abundance.
So much to do—in wintertime too! Snowshoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing…
